The Friends of the Elmira Civil War Prison Camp and Elmira College are again partnering to host the annual Civil War Symposium on July 26-28. This year’s event includes a dedication ceremony to mark the completion of a stockade wall that stands 12 feet high by 50 feet long at the edge of the Civil War Prison Camp, Barrack #3, 645 Winsor Avenue. The dedication will take place at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 28, at the conclusion of the Symposium.
“We hope to see local community members and Civil War history enthusiasts from all over the country at the Symposium and the dedication ceremony as we investigate the unique position Elmira held in one of the most important time periods for our country,” said Martin Chalk, Chemung County Legislature and President and Co-Founder of the Friends of the Elmira Civil War Prison Camp.
The event, which focuses on Elmira’s historic role in the Civil War, features presentations, a keynote speech, and tours of area historical sites. This year’s Dr. Thomas K. Meier Keynote will be presented by Wayne Motts, President Emeritus and Historian of the Gettysburg Foundation, in Meier Hall at Elmira College. The building is named in honor of the late Dr. Meier who was Elmira College President from 1987-2012.
New Symposium attendees will have a chance to tour Civil War-related sites in Elmira, including the Chemung Valley History Museum, John W. Jones Museum, and Barracks #3. Returning attendees will tour sites connected to Rev. Thomas K. Beecher, a popular minister who oversaw the development of Park Church in Elmira and a close friend of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain).
“Elmira College is excited to host Symposium attendees and help them engage with the local community and our shared rich history,” said Dr, Charles Lindsay, Elmira College President. “Founded in 1855, Elmira College’s early years were in the shadow of the Civil War. Known at the time as the Elmira Female College, students gazed out of windows in Cowles Hall as soldiers marched past on their way to different training sites.”
Registration for the Symposium costs $160 and covers food and event activities. The dedication ceremony is free and open to the public.
